Winners report - Julie Quinn and David Baldwin ARC2023

We were keen to come to The Edge rogaine because we knew the area was good, and we knew Ronnie and David would set an excellent course with a focus on being in the bush and make a good map. We were rewarded on all these fronts.

The map had what we thought were three distinct areas, south-east with the high points and - for the area - hills, the flatter north and the hilly west.

We have done quite a few 24 hour events as a MUV team and rarely had much competition, so it was very good to be at an event with nine other UV teams! We think of ourselves as slow and steady types, befitting our team name ‘Red Hill Ramblers’ and had taken the MUV nationals trophy in 2022 thanks to the ‘fast and furious’ team of our Victorian friends Sedunary and Trease not competing (as they were organising that event), and the dynamic duo of Jean and Peggy Douglas being in the WUV category.

At the recent Australian Rogaining Championships in Goobang National Park near Parkes we were told it was the 43^rd such event. That got me thinking about my own rogaining career, and I realised that it was indeed 43 years ago, in 1980, that I completed my first what we would now call rogaine. As many an ANU student will be remembering this month, adventure racing often first appears on the horizon in one’s first year at university. There was no IB for me at Adelaide Uni, and the event was still known as the ‘24 Hour Walk’ in South Australia then, but the concept was the same.
