ACT ROGAINING ASSOCIATION BULLETIN‍ |
Parkes and Parks Virtualgaine - 24 May to 9 June |
The 2025 virtual 4-hour rogaine “Parkes and Parks” event area includes the parliamentary suburb of Parkes, along with the many parks in the leafy suburbs of Barton, Forrest, Griffith, Red Hill, Hughes, Deakin and Yarralumla. Expect big views, famous landmarks and abundant nature, along with some lesser-known places and quirky artworks. The start location is at Deakin shops. It’s a virtual event, which means that you can take part at any time between Saturday 24 May and Monday 9 June 2025, and the course uses the MapRun app on your phone or watch to record your visits to control sites; there are no control flags. See the event page for instructions. You can compete individually or as a team, and you can come back as many times as you like. We will run free entries and compile the results for some virtual glory. We will also run some commentary on the ACTRA Facebook page so feel free to comment about your rogaine. The map, control descriptions and course setters notes will be placed on the website by 20 May. You can print your own copy or pick up a Teslin (waterproof) copy from Paddy Pallin in Lonsdale Street, Civic.
A big thank you to Jon Glanville for another virtual rogaine edition that we are sure you will enjoy. Â

Paddy Pallin 6 hr - Gudgenby Gaine‍ |
A beautiful warm calm day for the event brought out many rogainers and kangaroos. A superbly set course provided many choices immediately around the Hash House, lots of scope for running rogainers to the north in the open grassy country and roughly equal value for time points in the bush to the south of the Hash House. Congratulations to Caleb Addison, Seb Addison and Jonah Woodcock who won by a lot and also saw nearly all the course. Check out the gallery for some course photos and photos around the hash house and prize giving. HUGE thank you to all the volunteers at the event - Ron, Jean, Peggy, Lorraine, Grant, Kelvin, Lyndel and a special thanks to Kai and Jimmy who made an enourmous number of sausages and cheese toasties. Also many thanks to the team who had finished early and came and helped with the catering just at the time we were having a pasta disaster. Any help with our new role of catering is very much appreciated.‍ Thanks to Paddy Pallin for sponsoring the event and providing a large selection of lucky door prizes – much appreciated. ACT Parks were a pleasure to work with in setting up the event and helping to make it such a success. The trophies are currently being engraved and category winners will be contacted next week about having their trophy in pride of place for a year. Results on the website.

Paddy Pallin NSW Rogaine - "Belangloopy", 15 June |
NSW are holding their Paddy Pallin 6 hr event not far from the ACT in the Belanglo State Forest. You can expect to challenge yourself to big loops and big points with grand canyon views and steep climbs, or pamper yourself and team-mates with little loops enjoying time-honoured wandering through sandstone country with spectacular flora and fauna. NSW Rogaining Association have laid down the gauntlet for ACT with "the event will foster NSW/ACT rogainer-rivalry at its best". Let's join them in the fun. |

Pre‍sident's Piece - Oliver James
Hello and welcome to my first President’s Piece! When Stephen Goggs approached me in the food line after the Paddy Pallin rogaine and asked if I would consider taking over the role of ACTRA President I thought he was joking. But then he went on to officially nominate me. Although I was nervous to take it on, I was also excited to accept his nomination - honoured to represent the young generation of rogainers and give back to this organisation that I love.         I started rogaining in 2022 after moving to Canberra to go to ANU and getting involved with Inward Bound at Burton & Garran Hall. Since then I’ve become obsessed with the sport, despite some early challenges - including getting very lost on my first night rogaine, Lured by Lyrebirds near Mt Clear, and arriving back over half an hour late. My first 24-hour event, Go for Gold at Three Mile Dam, was so cold and wet that we had to camp out in a hut in the middle of the night, where we were very happy to find other rogainers had started a fire that we could warm up next to. Since then, I’ve had more success across a range of events – from the always enjoyable MapRun virtualgaines to the night rogaines and the 24-hour championships, including the recent 2025 Australasian Champs (pictured above with my fellow ANU rogaining partner E Wen Wong). I also began volunteering at events last year and set my first rogaine earlier this year, the Twilight at Rob Roy, alongside Stephen and Jon Glanville. I’m excited to to work with the new committee, which I think reflects the full span of rogainers from the young to the seasoned veterans of the sport. I know we’ll continue to deliver high-quality rogaines across the ACT and surrounds. Thank you to Stephen for his many years of service as ACTRA President and for everything he has done to support navigation sports in Canberra. I’m grateful that he’ll remain on the committee as Immediate Past President and for his guidance during this handover. Happy rogaining, Ollie James‍ |
