Entries Open for Kowen Night/Day Rogaine

Kowen Forest

‍Keen for a weekend of adventure? Join us in Kowen Forest, just east of Canberra, for two cracking rogaine events:

5-hour Night Rogaine: Kicks off at 5:00 pm on Saturday, 31 August

6-hour Day Rogaine: Starts at 9:00 am on Sunday, 1 September

We’re just a short 25-minute drive from central Canberra – mostly sealed road with the last 6km on a decent gravel stretch. Easy as.

The forest is mainly pine plantation, so expect some tricky nav through different growth stages. You’ll also hit pockets of native eucalypt forest, which are pretty clear underfoot. Watch out for the blackberries in the creeks though – they’ve got a mind of their own!

If you’re up for it, there are some solid climbs, but the views over the forest and out towards Canberra are worth the effort.

Entry Fees:

Full: $36

Concession: $28

Under 14s: Free

Teams only (2 to 5 people), so grab a mate – no solo missions this time.

Camping’s on at the Hash House site Saturday night for an extra $11.50. The legends from the Bungendore Rural Fire Brigade will be firing up some grub after both events (Saturday night and Sunday arvo). But if you're camping, bring your own brekkie – no feeds Sunday morning.

Entries close midnight Wednesday 28 August 2024

Late fees of  $10.00 per person applies from Sunday 25 August 2024.

President's Soapbox

As association president it is my duty and pleasure to represent ACTRA on the national council of the Australian Rogaining Association (ARA). This week I attended the ARA AGM with David Baldwin and Julie Quinn. The president confirmed to the meeting that Australia’s bid to host the World Championships for a fifth time since 1992 has been accepted by the International Federation - so mark your diaries now to visit the splendid Flinders Ranges in South Australia on 16-17 September 2027. In the meantime all delegates are looking forward to the Australasian Championships taking place 3 hours south of Perth, Western Australia at the end of September 2024, at which the Nigel Aylott Memorial Scholarship Fund is again being made available to subsidise teams from across the country to participate in the Intervarsity competition.

State members also discussed the potential for the rules of rogaining to be amended in due course to deal with new technologies, such as live tracking, especially where such enhancements could improve event safety.

In the meantime all rogainers are reminded that using any device (including a watch or phone) with a GPS receiver, pedometer, altimeter or other navigational aid on course is prohibited unless the organisers supply a means for rendering the device in accessible (eg putting your Strava enabled phone or Garmin watch in an event-supplied sealed opaque container).

‍

The Australasian Rogaining Championships are set to take place in southwest Western Australia this year, less than three hours south of Perth and under an hour from Bunbury.

It’s the perfect chance to combine a rogaine with exploring a region renowned for its beautiful walking trails, wildflowers, and wine.

In the InterVarsity Rogaining Championships, ANU will be proudly represented by Elise Palethorpe and Ryan Stocks, who have received sponsorship through the Nigel Aylott Memorial Sports Foundation. ACTRA is also supporting an additional ANU team, featuring Guyver Fu and Christopher Bradley.

‍Metrogaine Results

The Tuggeranong Hills and Playgrounds 6-hour metrogaine went down on Sunday, 4 August, from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Competitors hit the southern suburbs of Canberra, winding their way through a maze of footpaths, playgrounds, and soaking in the cracking views of the Brindabellas. For those keen on something a bit more challenging, there were some solid bush sections to tackle too.

Alongside the action, competitors enjoyed some amazing food, with a BBQ that got people talking. Rumour has it that some competitors powered through the day by scoffing down at least 8 sausages each!

A massive shoutout to Oscar Brown, who smashed it with a winning score of 2620, wrapping up the course in 5 hours, 53 minutes, and 57 seconds. Top effort from everyone who took part!
