ACT ROGAINING ASSOCIATION
Mt Rogers MapRun Mayhem - three hour virtual rogaine

HeartPond

The Mt Rogers MapRun Mayham 3 hr virtual rogaine is on from Saturday 30 May to Monday 8 June 2020.

A virtual rogaine has a map but no physical controls in the trees or anywhere else. Instead you will need a smartphone and to download the MapRunF App to score the virtual controls. More about this on the event page.

Entry is free, although we encourage you to enter early - by Monday 25 May please - so we know approximately how many maps to print.

You can print your own map or collect a Teslin one from Paddy Pallin in Lonsdale Street, Braddon from Thursday 28 May. Course setters notes, instructions to get to the start and a copy of the map to print if you prefer will be on the event page from Thursday 28 May too.

Not sure about the virtual rogaining bit? Try one of the virtual orienteering score (read rogaine style) events beforehand.

President's soapbox

Hello Rogainers

Being the president of a competitive sports association during a pandemic is a mixed blessing - on the one hand the administrative burden is very light, but on the other it is disappointing not to be able to provide fellow adventure racers with their regular fix. I trust you have all been keeping well, and finding a way to keep fit in this long gap between punching controls.

With our first event having been cancelled during the fiery summer from hell, and the Paddy having had to transition to a metrogaine in light of all the park closures, you could be forgiven for wondering whatever next. Well the good news is there is a next, and it is a wonder. Thanks to Jon Glanville and the technology of MapRun, next month we encourage you and your team mates to enter the brave new world of virtual rogaining, or what I am calling a ‘nogaine’. It will be an experience like no other (or perhaps like every other activity at the moment?) - no punching, no touching even, and sadly no cheese toasties, but you will still have a chance to go for a run and test your route planning, time management and team building skills - all in the wilderness otherwise known as Belconnen.

Subject to your feedback we hope to be able to stage more of these events over coming months, hopefully venturing out into bushland with good GPS coverage in the capital region. Check out our Facebook post for instructions [here] on how to join in the fun as we look forward to more rogaining again soon.

Future rogaines

While there is a plan for a staged re-opening of what we are all allowed to do, it is unclear when we will be able to host a regular rogaine. However, the committee is keen to hold rogaines in a virtual sense until then - that is if you indicate to us you want them to happen. Show us that by doing the Mt Rogers MapRun Mayhem!

We're planning a winter event, a cycle event and then we will see what else. A 24 hr event is all planned with a course that is ready for the end of October, or as soon as we are allowed to.
