World Rogaining Championships

The World Rogaining Championships competition area is about 200 km2 in size located in the Sierra Nevada mountain range north of Lake Tahoe, in California. The average altitude in the area is around 2300m, the highest point is 2700m, and the lowest point is about 1900m.
Slopes are mostly hilly with some steep areas and deep ravines. Snow covers the area for 7-8 months of the year which contributes to the forest being very open and runnable with just small patches of thick vegetation. The forest ranges from open grassy areas to mainly pine forest and some rocky outcrops. Streams in the area will be mostly low during the summer. |

Spring Rogaine Wrap Up
Some 225 people enjoyed the cool and slightly damp conditions at the ACT Spring rogaine in Bungonia National Park. The memorable wins for the event were the family teams. The Lamont family won the category in the 6 hour event with 1290 points. Sam and his mate Angus took Adrian Shepherd for a 12 hour adventure and won the family category with 1870 points. Also well done to the young women's team of Zoe Terrill, Natalie Miller and Justine Hobson who won the women's category in the 6 hour event with 1100 points.
Two teams cleared the course in the 12 hour event - Julie and David came in 30 minutes before Gill Fowler and Phil Whitten. Mike Hotchkis and Joel Mackay came close, but they had the special treat of seeing a koala running along the ground near control 91.
Thanks to all the volunteers for this event and all the events during 2019. Special thanks too for the volunteers from Hartley Life Care who feed us during and after events. If you are still looking for a rogaine challenge, the Australiasian champs in Tasmania are on the weekend 9-10 November. Get in quick as entries close on 27 October.

| Making Rogaining Professional – A History of the Navlight Scoring System |

Those who partook in their first rogaine within the past decade will most likely only know the electronic scoring system known as “Navlight,” used at all NSW (and most other Australian) rogaines. In addition to simplicity of registering or “punching” a tag at the checkpoint and bringing up the results within minutes of the finish, it has done much to add an element of professionalism to the sport. Thanks to this system participants and organisers can click on any team and check out their routes, and the number of teams visiting each control, exponentially enhancing the post-event analysis.
But just like almost any piece of technology, there was a time that it did not exist, and people knew a world where rogaine scoring was done manually with many problems until such a mind came along to develop a system that could automate the process.
At the recent Australasian Champs in Tasmania I had the privilege to meet this great mind, Peter Squires, the Kiwi who invented the system in the early 2000s, and hear a bit about how it came about. He kindly offered me his time to share this in a bit more depth over a series of emails so I could share this story with the rogaining community and also get a feel for what old-style rogaining was like!
