ACT ROGAINING ASSOCIATION BULLETIN‍

Spring 6/12 hour entries open

PICTURE

The NSW/ACT Spring Challenge 6/12 hour "More Tea for the Pot" rogaine will be held at Gurnang State Forest, only 2.5 hours from Canberra on Saturday 17 October. This event offers competitors access to truly superb rogaining country. Participants will navigate through a beautiful mix of native eucalypt forests and mature pine plantations, both featuring a remarkably open understory. The terrain varies from flat with subtle features to steeper hills with well-defined spurs and gullies. The course has been set with navigational challenges tailored for both novice and experienced teams alike. Whether you plan to walk or run, the open terrain makes moving through this unique landscape an absolute pleasure. The area is home to some amazing wildlife, and if you are lucky, you might spot wombats in full daylight, or greater gliders after dark. Entry is $90 full, or $65 under 23 or concession. Event limited to 300 people and entries close Monday 12 Oct so don't delay!

ACTRA Night/Day/Cycle Results‍

ACTRA's most youthful and dynamic event of the year took place last month with over 400 (mostly ANU student) rogainers descending on Tallaganda State Forest for the annual night, day and cycle event.

Rogainers were treated to an undulating mix of pine and native forest in a course set by Greg Terrill, Jon Glanville and Rohan Hyslop, which was accessible to beginners (and bikes) but still left plenty of challenging terrain for experienced teams. Much of the course hadn't been used for a rogaine since 2016, so it was great to get out in some unfamiliar terrain.

From the hash house perspective, an action filled night event was followed by a more relaxed day event with excellent weather for both events. A big thank you to the ANU Inward Bound Committee for providing so many volunteers, and good luck to all the IB runners racing this weekend.

ANU Inward Bound 2026 edition

The unique long-running ANU Inward Bound event ta‍kes place this weekend with teams dropped on Friday night 9 October. If you were wondering why all the ANU students are at rogaines, this is what they are all training for! It's an interhall sports competition where teams of 4 are blindfolded and dropped in the bush and need to find their way to a secret endpoint. There will be live tracking of all teams throughout Saturday if you want to get your fix of dot watching!

WRC 2027 Entries Open!

Entries to the WRC2027 are now open, with nearly 200 people entered after only a week!
Event Dates: Thursday 16 - Friday 17 September 2027
World Rogaining Championships are an opportunity for a country to bring out their most talented course setters and showcase their most spectacular terrain. The 20th World Rogaining Championships near Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges of South Australia is no exception to this. The stunning landscape is perfect for rogaining. On the hills is possible to see long distances and the colourful rocky bones of this ancient country, and in watercourses to stare in awe at the massive, old river red gums. However, you need to come and see if for yourself, let the red dirt get under your fingernails and you will start to feel the magic of this country. World Rogaining Championships are open to all rogainers. You don't have to be an elite (overall or in your age category) to come and appreciate an excellent course. The setters are making sure they are thinking about recreational rogainers as well as the elites in their setting plans.

WRC 2027 Volunteers Needed‍!

The World Rogaining Championships needs many volunteers to ensure the smooth running of the event. We have quite a few different roles that volunteers can help with. You can let us know if there is a particular role that interests you, or if you are happy to do a mix of tasks. For more detail and to let us know you are keen to join the team, head to the WRC2027 website: https://wrc2027.rogaining.au/volunteer/

There are two critical roles where the ARA is looking for a suitable person to join the organising team as soon as possible: Catering Manager and Admin Manager.

Catering Manager: The Catering Manager will oversee the event catering, including a number of pre-event meals, during and post event catering, and a remote All Night Café during the event. The event catering is being provided for participants, volunteers and a small number of supporters. A team of volunteers will be available to assist with food preparation and serving etc. For more detail see the role description.

Admin Manager: The Administration Manager will oversee the admin for the WRC2027. The Administration Manager will need to be highly organized and develop sound procedures for administration, as well as manage a team of volunteers to run the admin desk at the event. It will be important that the Administration Manager, together with the admin volunteers, are people orientated as this is the key place where competitors will interact with event volunteers. For more detail see the role description.

If you are interested in either the Catering or Admin Manager role, please contact Al Sankauskas by email at al@atdi.com.au. ‍

President's Piece‍

It’s hard to believe we’re already getting towards the end of another year of rogaining! Luckily there is still the chance to do one more event at the Spring Interstate Challenge, and give the NSW rogainers a tough competition.

I’d like to wish all the ANU students competing in Inward Bound this weekend the very best of luck. Hopefully the Night and Day events gave you all a great opportunity to hone your nav skills.

As we start looking ahead to 2027, I’d also encourage everyone to think about getting involved behind the scenes. ACTRA relies on volunteers to make our events happen, and there are plenty of ways to help, whether it’s setting and vetting a course, map making, or helping on the day. If you’ve enjoyed coming along to events this year, volunteering is a great way to get more involved and meet other rogainers.

There’s plenty to look forward to, with next year’s calendar shaping up to be an exciting one. I’m looking forward to seeing plenty of familiar faces, as well as some new ones, out on the maps in 2027.

Happy rogaining,
Ollie‍

Vic Tallarook 50th Anniversary‍

A massive turnout of almost 500 rogainers came to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our wonderful sport on Tallarook plateau, Victoria, where the first official rogaine was held. There were three concurrent events with 6hr, Roving 15hr and Vic Champs 24hour all starting at 12 noon on the uniquely Victorian "Friday before Grand Final" public holiday. For the most part the weather was kind but the terrain was tough and the lure of some soup or a toastie at the Hash house and the All Night Cafe kept everyone in good spirits.‍

Congratulations to Ivan Koudashev, Tristan White and Xanda Kolesnikow (NSW) who took out the State Championships with a mind bending 3680 points. They were followed closely by Julie Quinn and David Baldwin (ACT) in 2nd and Tim Cochrane and Leanne Haupt (ACT) claiming the Bronze. Other ACT highlights were Tony Slatyer with Brett Davis, 1st MUV, and Jeannie and Peggy Douglass 1st WV, WSV, WUV and 2nd WO.
